Goodreads Summary:

For ten years, I’ve lived in a gilded cage inside King Midas’s golden castle. But one night changed everything.

Now I’m here, a prisoner of Fourth Kingdom’s army, and I’m not sure if I’m going to make it out of this in one piece. They’re marching to battle, and I’m the bargaining chip that will either douse the fire or spark a war.

At the heart of my fear, my worry, there’s him—Commander Rip.

Known for his brutality on the battlefield, his viciousness is unsurpassed. But I know the truth about what he is.

Fae.

The betrayers. The murderers. The ones who nearly destroyed Orea, wiping out Seventh Kingdom in the process. Rip has power sizzling beneath this skin and glinting spikes down his spine. But his eyes—his eyes are the most compelling of all.

When he turns those black eyes on me, I feel captive for an entirely different reason.

I may be out of my cage, but I’m not free, not even close. In the game of kings and armies, I’m the gilded pawn. The question is, can I out maneuver them?

  • A mender is sent to heal Auren. He notices her tendrils.
  • Auren is made to sleep in Commander Rip’s tent because he doesn’t trust her.
  • The soldiers make mean comments about Auren so Rip has them punished with latrine duty.
  • Malina starts holding court and the nobles all freak out.
  • Rip starts asking Auren about Midas but she doesn’t want to give him any information.
  • Lu tries to make friends with Auren and takes her to see the other women from Midas’ harem.
  • They’re all fighting and no one is happy to see Auren.
  • Auren speaks to Rissa to figure out if she told anyone about her gold powers. Rissa didn’t, but she is holding onto the information for later.
  • Rissa wants Auren to help her buy her way out of the royal contract so she can be free.
  • Malina takes control of the messenger hawks and starts preparing for war.
  • Auren gets sick. She accidentally shows Rip and Hojat her tendrils.
  • Hojat reveals that Mist is pregnant with Midas’ baby. Auren freaks out.
  • Auren comes across the fighting pit and thinks Twig is being tortured but he’s just training.
  • Rip wants to spar with Auren for god knows what reason. She is worried he’s going to rip her head off.
  • It turns out his nickname isn’t because of that but we still don’t know the reason.
  • They spar. Auren admits she is fae. She realises all the soldiers know that Rip is too.
  • Malina realises the pirates don’t have Auren – the Fourth’s army does. That’s a shame since Malina paid the pirates to take care of Auren and they failed massively.

  • Malina goes to leave because everyone is riled up. her path is blocked by Pruinn, who has powers to show people how to gain their deepest desire.
  • Pruinn gives Malina a taste of his power and Malina gets a map. It seems to be incorrect or misdrawn because it shows Seventh Kingdom, which should no longer exist.

  • Auren insists she doesn’t need the cage to keep her safe. They argue. He insists that she gets in the cage.

  • Midas invites King Ravinger to dine. He and his army arrive.
  • The two kings argue. Ravinger seems to know Midas betrayed King Funke to gain Fifth Kingdom. Midas pretends he’s just looking after it while Prince Niven grows up.
  • Midas offers Ravinger gold. However much he wants.
  • Ravinger refuses and says he wants a strip of land instead, or his army will attack at nightfall. Midas agrees but is confused.
  • While Auren is trying to break out of the cage, Ravinger enters the room. He kills the guards with his rot powers.
  • Ravinger learns of Auren’s powers and what she can do.
  • Auren learns that Ravinger is Rip but also someone called Slade???
