Goodreads Summary:

Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

But when she’s tracked down by the obscenely wealthy mother of a former crewman, she’s offered a job no bandit could refuse: retrieve her comrade’s kidnapped daughter for a kingly sum. The chance to have one last adventure with her crew, do right by an old friend, and win a fortune that will secure her family’s future forever? It seems like such an obvious choice that it must be God’s will.

Yet the deeper Amina dives, the more it becomes alarmingly clear there’s more to this job, and the girl’s disappearance, than she was led to believe. For there’s always risk in wanting to become a legend, to seize one last chance at glory, to savor just a bit more power…and the price might be your very soul.

What happened in The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi?

  • We start the book with a scribe gushing over Amina al-Sirafi, which, fair. Amina is an infamous pirate who has lots of stories told about her. She became somewhat of a legend. Amina then tells the scribe her story.
  • Amina has been hired by two young men to go to a lake which surrounds some old ruins (DAEVABAD REFERENCE). The two men want to summon a creature for their own benefit, which as we all know is a terrible idea. The creature attacks, and Amina has to reveal who she is in order to fight it off and save them all.
  • Amina is back at home and fixing her roof when an old woman called Salima shows up. Salima has heard the stories about Amina, and wants to hire her to find her missing grandaughter. Salima is the mother of Asif, one of Amina’s old crewmates, so Amina feels like she at least owes it to Asif (who seemingly died at some point but we don’t know how yet) to rescue his daughter, Dunya.
  • Salima threatens Amina and her family so really, Amina has no choice anyway. Salima says that a dangerous Frank kidnapped Dunya, and she offers Amina a million dinars to bring her back. Amina agrees to look for her for four months.
  • Amina’s own daughter, Marjana, wants to go to school like a normal child but Amina has hidden the family away in the mountains to keep them safe.
  • In the next interlude, we learn the story of a man whose ship was taken over by Amina. His men declare they would rather die than surrender to a woman, but they actually surrender quite quickly. The elderly women who were on board were quite impressed by Amina and her crew.
  • Amina readies herself for her journey. She recalls her grandfather, who got the family into piracy in the first place. He was known as the Sea Leopard.
  • Amina’s mother argues with her and tries to get her to stay. She reminds Amina of the last time she returned from an adventure, and how broken Amina was. Amina assures her mother that it won’t happen again.
  • Marjana tells Amina that she has a bad feeling about all this. Amina is concerned because she knows her daughter is not a normal child, and her father would often have these kinds of feelings too.
  • In the next interlude, the report warns of a Mistress of Poisons. She seems quite dangerous.
  • Amina heads to a town to meet an old friend called Dalila. She’s the Mistress of Poisons. She’s a bit older now and is losing her eyesight, but Amina finds her just as intimidating. Amina hasn’t reached out to her in years and it’s clear that Dalila is hurt by this.
  • Amina explains the situation to Dalila, who immediately agrees to join her old bestie to get the crew back together. Not before mocking Amina for her choice in husbands, of course.
  • Dalila tells Amina that she received a letter from the Frank, whose name is Falco. He wanted Dalila to share some knowledge with him, so it’s clear that he’s after something.
  • Dalila and Amina head to Aden, where Amina’s ship, the Marawati, is being looked after by their old crew member, Tinbu. When they arrive, they see a crowd gathering to watch the ship be surrounded by two warships. Apparently some people have been murdered.
  • They spot Tinbu, who has been captured by some government officials. He is arrested and taken away. Amina is determined to save him, and also she needs to get her ship back.
  • Amina notices a man defending Tinbu. His name is Yusuf, and is Tinbu’s lover. Amina convinces Yusuf to help break Tinbu and the rest of the crew out of prison before they can be killed.
  • The next interlude discusses knockout drugs… which is relevant to Dalila’s expertise.
  • Amina and co. head to the prison. Dalila knocks out the guards and also strips them. Amina frees Tinbu, and then asks his crew to swear loyalty to her. One of them is being unnecessarily crass so she knocks his teeth out. She lets them all out though because they’ll now work for her on the Marawati.
  • The crew swim to the Marawati. There’s on person guarding the ship so she gets rid of him immediately. The crew row the Marawati out of the harbour. They’re chased by the warships and almost blocked in, but Amina always wins in a game of chicken and the ship blocking their exit is forced to move or to get rammed.
  • The next interlude talks about the pirates on the Malabar Coast. One of them escaped his enslaver and went to work for Amina (this was Tinbu).
  • Tinbu tells Amina that Falco approached him too, and he’s specifically looking for Amina. Dalila wonders if Majed, the crew’s ex-navigator, has told Falco where to find people.
  • Tinbu has brought a cat aboard because she’s lucky.
  • The crew head to Zabid to intercept Falco’s emissary, Layth.
  • They approach Layth in a tavern. He knows who Amina is, and tells her that Falco wants to hire her to sail with him to collect magical objects, specifically the Moon of Saba.
  • Layth tells Amina that Dunya asked to go with Falco, rather than him kidnapping her.
  • Layth then chokes on coins, because he betrayed Falco.
  • Amina goes to confront Salima because her granddaughter was not kidnapped. Salima insists that Amina still needs to find Dunya and bring her back, or Salima will send her men to kill Marjana and Amina’s family.
  • Amina searches Dunya’s room for clues. Dunya seems to have been researching her family history, and various magical objects.
  • Amina and the crew go to get Majed, the navigator. He’s currently retired in Somalia with his family. His wife encourages him to go along with them. Majed is the best navigator and is great at maps and such, so Amina really needs his help to find Socotra, where Falco has headed.
  • The crew travels to Socotra and it’s very smooth sailing. Amina, Tinbu, and Dalila look around the island. They find some villagers who have been impaled and stuck onto trees. They sleep for the night, and they spot a footprint in the dirt. Dalila insists it wasn’t there the night before. They get creeped out and decide to leave.
  • And then Raksh arrives. He’s Amina’s husband.
  • Amina tells the scribe the story of how she married a demon. She was drunk in the Maldives and was approached by a handsome man called Raksh. He enticed her and they got married so they could sleep together. Amina woke up the next day and saw that Raksh is a blue skinned demon with tusks and everything.
  • Amina tries to fight Raksh but he’s very hard to kill. He is upset with Amina because she left him in a locked box and it took him ages to get out. Amina accuses Raksh of feeding on Asif.
  • Raksh is also upset because none of his contracts are as good as his one with Amina. He wants Amina to break the connection between them. The crew suggest they get a divorce.
  • Raksh admits that he has been with Falco and he gave him information on Amina’s crew. He tells Amina that Falco’s crew survived a shipwreck and are now hiding out near a cave on the island.
  • The crew heads to the cave and Raksh leads them through the tunnels. Amina becomes enchanted by a creepy door but Raksh stops her from going through it.
  • They enter the cave opening after some time, but no one is there. Dunya seems to have left. Amina frees the villagers who have been tied up, and asks her crew to lead them out through the tunnels while she confronts Falco.
  • Amina recalls how she agreed to work with Raksh after they got married. Raksh told her that he feeds off ambition and desire.
  • Amina finally meets Falco. He wants to know where the Marawati is but Amina keeps avoiding the question. Falco tells Amina about his time in Jerusalem and how he became disillusioned by war. He wants to get hold of magical items to gain power.
  • Amina asks Falco where Dunya is. Falco confirms that Dunya joined him willingly, but she has now run off.
  • Falco’s men force Amina to drink a disgusting concoction, which allows her to see that Falco’s men have transformed. Falco is trying to do this to her, presumably.
  • The men start to push Amina into a pit of scorpions when her crew returns for her and helps her escape.
  • The villagers show Amina and her crew a hidden beach before they go and deal with some pirates on the west of the island.
  • Raksh tells Amina how Falco captured a marid by feeding it human souls.
  • Raksh tells Amina to concentrate on Dunya so he can help find her in the open ocean. The Marawati heads north.
  • They find a very dehydrated Dunya on a small boat. When she recovers on the Marawati, Dunya tells Amina that her grandmother is trying to marry her off to the governor of Aden and she absolutely can’t go back to her. Amina wants to return her to Salima though because she thinks it’ll be safer than wherever else Dunya could go.
  • Dunya offered to help Falco find the Moon of Saba, not realising that he’s interested in harvesting its powers. Dunya reveals that the Moon isn’t a pearl or jewel but a washbasin.
  • The myth of the Moon of Saba tells that al-Dabaran admired Bilqis and wanted to visit her so he entered the washbasin.
  • Amina asks Dunya whether she identifies as male, and Dunya tells Amina that she’s not sure yet.
  • Amina confesses to the crew that what happened to Asif was her own fault. The others say they actually all made deals with Raksh so they’re all to blame.
  • The marid attacks the ship. It’s after Dunya.
  • Amina sacrifices herself to save her crew and she tries to fight off Falco, who is super fast.
  • Dunya persuades Falco to leave the crew alive in return for her help. They head back to Socotra.
  • Amina drifts off on some debris. She lands on a magical island. She drinks some water from a tree and she starts seeing creatures and colourful birds. Then she comes across mermaids and also Raksh.
  • Raksh tells his own story about the Moon of Saba. He says there’s no romance between the moon, al-Dabaran, and Bilqis. Bilqis rejected al-Dabaran, so he decided he would spy on her from the basin. Bilqis trapped him for being gross and used his powers for herself.
  • Raksh tells Amina that the eclipse will make it easier to control magical objects, so Amina doesn’t have much time. Raksh doesn’t want Falco to succeed because he could end up being used as a power source.
  • Raksh encourages Amina to speak to the peris, who live on the island. They want everything to be balanced, and Falco’s plans would create an imbalance if they were to succeed, so maybe the peris would help.
  • Raksh tells Amina that Asif actually approached him, as he wanted to be rich and admired. Raksh accidentally made a deal which cost Asif his soul. He really shouldn’t joke around humans.
  • The peris meet with Amina. They don’t like her ideas at all and drop her out of the sky. A peri called Khayzur catches her and takes her back to them.
  • Amina asks for their help again, and they agree that if she collects five Transgressions (magical objects) and destroys them, they’ll allow her to live. They say that she is also a Transgression as she drank from the magical island.
  • Khayzur flies Amina and Raksh back to Socotra. Amina meets with the pirates in the west and asks for their help. They turn out to be quite unhelpful, but one guy called Magnun agrees to help her on her mission.
  • Magnun gives Amina a magical knife which could also be a Transgression.
  • Amina and Magnun’s crew head to the beach on the other side of the island. Amina’s crew are there, as is the sleeping marid.
  • Amina kills one of Falco’s men. She sees a cord, which is connecting him to Falco.
  • Falco’s men all have this bond, so Amina cuts through them all and frees her crew.
  • Tinbu kills the biggest guy, Yazid, with the help of Dalila’s poison vials.
  • Falco escapes into the cave with Dunya. The marid attacks.
  • Amina fights off the marid and she cuts off its bonds with Falco, freeing it. It tries to bond with Amina but she refuses. It drags Amina into the ocean.
  • Majed rescues Amina from the depths.
  • Amina heads off to the cave by herself to confront Falco and to stop him from using the Moon. She enters the magic door that almost got her before.
  • She comes across Asif, who is crying and angry at her about what happened to him.
  • Amina recalls about how she had to kill Asif after he came back to life without a soul after he died of an illness.
  • Amina realises that this Asif is an illusion – the real Asif wasn’t angry with her at all.
  • Amina makes the monster reveal itself and chops off its head.
  • Amina navigates her way through the rest of the cave, which is filled with a lot of other monsters, and eventually she finds Dunya and Falco. Dunya is currently floating and reciting a spell. Falco tells Amina to be quiet so Dunya doesn’t get distracted.
  • The column in front of Dunya explodes. Falco seizes the basin and looks into it. The moonlight glows in his eyes and all the monsters flee.
  • Dunya explains that she reversed the spell, and instead of giving Falco the power to control the Moon, the Moon and al-Dabaran are now controlling Falco.
  • al-Dabaran tries to destroy the basin. He attacks Amina, so Amina calls to the marid for help. It breaks through the rocks to allow moonlight to spill in. Al Dabaran runs towards the light, so Amina chucks the basin at him and white light flashes.
  • The cave starts to collapse. Falco, no longer possessed, gets trapped under rubble. Amina stabs him in the chest just in case.
  • The marid is no longer tied to Amina.
  • Everyone prepares to head home. Raksh is very excited because he wants Amina to become a legend while she searches for the remaining Transgressions.
  • Amina sleeps with Raksh, and then chains him to a raft by tricking him. She wants to get rid of him for a while but might need his luck in the future.
  • Amina tells her crew about her magical job. She wants to show Marjana the world and also finish this quest. Her friends are obviously going to help her.
  • Dunya sends her grandmother a letter, which Amina delivers. Dunya tells Salima that she’s not coming home but Amina saved her from Falco. Salima won’t pay Amina for finishing the task but she won’t hurt her family either. The family djinn gives Amina a bag for Dunya which contains some items that she will need for researching.
  • Amina returns home. She shows Marjana the ship and her crew.
  • Dunya now goes by Jamal, and has been the scribe all along.
