Goodreads Summary:

A duke has been murdered. The lord of Thorn Grove has been framed. And Fate, the elusive brother of Death, has taken up residence in a sumptuous estate nearby. He's hellbent on revenge after Death took the life of the woman he loved many years ago...and now he's determined to have Signa for himself, no matter the cost.

Signa and her cousin Blythe are certain that Fate can save Elijah Hawthorne from prison if they will entertain his presence. But the more time the girls spend with Fate, the more frightening their reality becomes as Signa exhibits dramatic new powers that link her to Fate's past. With mysteries and danger around every corner, the cousins must decide if they can trust one another as they navigate their futures in high society, unravel the murders that haunt their family, and play Fate's unexpected games-all with their destinies hanging in the balance.

Here is a spoiler summary of what happened in Foxglove by Adalyn Grace to help refresh your memory before you read the sequel. If you need help remembering what happened in Foxglove then you’re in the right place.

What happened in Foxglove?

  • As we know, Lord Wakefield dropped dead at the end of Belladonna. Signa’s uncle is accused of murdering Wakefield by poisoning because he was trying to buy Grey’s.
  • Fate shows up and thinks that Signa is the reincarnation of his dead wife, Life. Life was killed by Death as she wasn’t immortal. Life was chill with this but Fate had other plans (lol) and he told Death not to kill her. The Bubonic Plague broke out in Europe because of this, and then Life died anyway. Fate has held a grudge on Death ever since.
  • Fate curses Death so that his touch becomes deadly for Signa. If Death touches her, Signa will become ill. Fate prevents Signa from being able to see or hear death, which is quite torturous for her.
  • Blythe comes up with a plan to win Fate over so she can set her father free. As Fate is pretending to be a prince, she thinks that allying herself to him will improve her social standing and allow her to free her father. She plans to charm him. It doesn’t work out though because she discovers that he’s the one who framed her father.
  • Blythe starts having weird visions, possibly because she recovered from poisoning and something isn’t quite right. She thinks she sees her maid as a corpse.
  • Signa and Fate agree on a deal. She will allow Fate to court her for one month, and he will allow her to see Death after their dates. I feel like this is a bad deal for Fate here.
  • Signa wonders if she really is Life because she does have some powers. She loves Death, but she’s conflicted because she seems to have once been married to Fate. She plans to continue to get closer to Fate to make him release her uncle from prison.
  • Blythe thinks Wakefield’s daughter is being poisoned. The only way to find out for sure is to try her drink, but she’s worried because she doesn’t want to be poisoned again. Fate tastes the drink and then kisses Blythe so she can tell if it’s belladonna. It isn’t.
  • Blythe and Fate save a baby fox from a hunt.
  • So far, Blythe has believed her brother Percy left town, but she finds out that Signa killed him. She’s really upset, especially because she isn’t aware that Percy was the one who was poisoning Blythe and their mother. Blythe and Signa have a fight, and Signa is forced to admit that she is a reaper.
  • Signa helps a horse have a peaceful death. Blythe thinks it shouldn’t have died at all, and so Signa brings it back to life.
  • Signa heads back to her ancestral home. It’s a big mansion called Foxglove. There she meets loads of ghosts, who were all people who died at the same party as her parents. The ghosts don’t particularly want Signa there and try to kill her.
  • Blythe offers to marry Fate in exchange for his help. Fate declines the proposal, and tells her the truth about who he is. He tells Blythe that Death is corrupting Signa. They decide to work together to bring Fate and Signa together, and Fate agrees to free Blythe’s father from prison because he is about to be hanged for the Wakefield murder.
  • Signa continues to practise her magic. She is unable to use Life’s magic, which isn’t making sense to her. One of the ghosts was best friend’s with Signa’s mother, and advises Signa on the whole power thing.
  • Fate shows up and Signa makes him promise not to hurt Blythe.
  • Fate makes Signa throw a party at the mansion, which is a little on the nose.
  • Since they died at the last party, the ghosts all freak out. There’s definitely some trauma there. Signa and Death help them move onto the afterlife.
  • Blythe finds out that Wakefield’s daughter is pregnant with Percy’s child. Someone has been giving her tansy, and now she is dying. Signa thinks she might use her Life powers to heal her.
  • Blythe tells Signa she must marry Fate in return for his help. Signa agrees to do this because she feels super guilty about killing Percy.
  • Signa spends one last night with Death. Blythe sees Death and Signa together and realises they really do love each other. She feels guilty for supporting Fate.
  • Blythe overhears them talking and learns the truth about Percy – that he was an evil poisoner. She realises that Signa saved her life.
  • Death tries to kill Fate for being awful, but Signa stops him. Signa is about to open her palm and bleed on Fate’s tapestry (which would marry her to Fate), but Blythe pushes Signa out of the way and steals the tapestry.
  • Blythe threatens to burn the tapestry, and Fate can’t do anything against Blythe because he promised Signa he wouldn’t.
  • Blythe cuts herself and bleeds on the tapestry, binding her to Fate. This technically means that Signa withheld her part of the bargain because the wording about which bride Fate would take was very vague. This is why we have terms and conditions.
  • Rings appear on Fate’s and Blythe’s fingers.
  • Signa notices that Blythe’s hand has healed the cut already. Signa’s brain starts putting everything together, and she realises that the only times she was successfully able to use Life’s powers was when Blythe was there.
  • It turns out that Blythe must be the reincarnation of Life and not Signa.
  • Neither Fate nor Blythe realise this, though.
  • Blythe’s father is released from prison, and it turns out that it was his brother who poisoned Lord Wakefield to prevent Percy’s child from being raised outside of the Hawthorne family.
  • Fate announces his engagement to Blythe right at the end of the book.
