Goodreads Summary:

Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in Bon Temps, Louisiana. She has only a few close friends, because not everyone appreciates Sookie’s gift: she can read minds. That’s not exactly every man’s idea of date bait – unless they’re undead; vampires and the like can be tough to read. And that’s just the kind of guy Sookie’s been looking for. Maybe that’s why, when she comes across a naked vampire, she doesn’t just drive on by. He hasn’t got a clue who he is, but Sookie has: Eric looks just as scary and sexy – and dead – as ever. But now he has amnesia, he’s sweet, vulnerable, and in need of Sookie’s help – because whoever took his memory now wants his life.

What happened in Dead to the World?

  • Bill leaves Sookie a note asking her to invite him in if she wants to talk to him. He writes that he has to return to Lorena if she calls because she’s his maker. He says he’s planning to go to Peru to work on his vampire database there.
  • On New Year’s Eve, Sookie goes to work and makes plans for the new year with her coworkers. She spots Jason, who’s on a date with a shifter.
  • On the way home, Sookie spots a half naked man. It’s Eric. He seems to have lost his memories so Sookie takes him home with her.
  • Sookie calls Pam at Fantasia, who explains that witches attacked her and Eric.
  • Jason pops over and Sookie asks him to buy some men’s clothes. Jason is curious and then finds out that it’s Eric that he’s buying the clothes for.
  • Pam and Cho arrive to pick Eric up. Pam explains the witch situation: Eric was meant to pay for protection so the witches wouldn’t attack. One of the witches fancied Eric and Eric turns her down. A spell went off and erased Eric’s memory.
  • Jason is back with the clothes and suggests that Eric should be safe at Sookie’s because the witches wouldn’t know to look for him there.
  • The following day, Jason doesn’t show up for work. Jason’s boss informs Sookie and asks where he is. Sookie contacts the sheriff but he’s useless, so Sookie starts searching for her brother herself.
  • Alcide shows up and helps. They go to look for Jason by the pond and find some blood on the pier.
  • Sookie bumps into Tara again, whose memory seems to have been erased by Franklin. Sookie asks Tara about witches, and it turns out that their coworker, Holly, is a witch and is part of a coven.
  • Tara introduces Sookie to Claudine, who’s interested in supernatural beings.
  • Sookie asks Holly some questions about witchcraft, which Holly describes as a religion. Holly tells Sookie about the new powerful group in Shreveport, who enhance their powers with vampire blood.
  • Holly tells Sookie she’s in town because the witches wanted to host a summit.
  • Sookie continues her search for Jason. He’s not at Carla’s house in Shreveport so Sookie heads to Fangtasia. Sookie bumps into Belinda, who has been the victim of a spell that has messed with her leg muscles. Ginger died in the witch attack. Sookie calls 911 and runs off before the cops get there.
  • Sookie calls Alcide and explains what is going on. They both go to the Coronel Flood, the pack master, to fill him in. One pack member called Adabelle seems to be missing so Alcide and Sookie go looking for her. They find her dead in her shop.
  • They call the cops, who want to know why Sookie and Alcide are at a random bridal shop. Sookie lies about them being engaged.
  • Sookie heads home after a long day and has sex with Eric.
  • Hallow, the witch leader, shows up at Sookie’s workplace. Holly sneaks away before anyone spots her. Hallow tells everyone in the bar that they’re looking for Eric. Sookie is unable to read her mind. Hallow asks to speak to Bill so Sookie tells her where Bill lives.
  • Sookie returns home to Eric and tells him what has happened. He wants to head to Bill’s house. On the way, they spot a witch ritual happening in the graveyard and Sookie and Eric watch.
  • The witches break into Bill’s house and then get scared off by werewolves and other shifters. They run over a werewolf and Sookie takes her to the hospital.
  • Sookie and Claudine head to Merlotte’s to talk to the supernatural beings. They all decide to team up to take the witches down.
  • Bill is back in town btw.
  • Sookie and co. head to Pam’s place and Debby is there. Bill tells Sookie that Debby was involved in his torture in the previous book.
  • Sookie heads to the witch HQ and is attacked by Holly. Holly has been helping the witches because they threatened her son. Sookie lets Holly leave. Bubba and Pam show up, and Pam breaks into the HQ.
  • The bad witches are killed and the good ones are saved. Hallow is still alive so Pam takes her to remove Eric’s spell. Debby tries to shoot Sookie but Eric jumps in front of her to protect her. Sookie shoots Debby.
  • Eric’s memories return, but he’s unable to remember what he had been doing for the past few days. Pam and Sookie tell Eric what happened.
  • Sookie is informed that the local were-panthers may have something to do with Jason’s disappearance. She and Sam head over to Hotshot to investigate.
  • Calvin takes them to Felton’s house to look for Jason, who is in Felton’s shed. He has bite marks all over him. Felton was trying to turn Jason so Crystal wouldn’t be so interested in him.
  • Jason is now going to be a were-panther.
  • Sookie informs the police, including Alcide, that Jason can’t remember anything about his disappearance.
  • Eric turns up at Sookie’s place again and asks what happened when he lost his memory. Sookie doesn’t want to tell him the entire story.
