Goodreads Summary:

Gavin Guile is dying.

He’d thought he had five years left—now he has less than one. With fifty thousand refugees, a bastard son, and an ex-fiancée who may have learned his darkest secret, Gavin has problems on every side. All magic in the world is running wild and threatens to destroy the Seven Satrapies.

Worst of all, the old gods are being reborn, and their army of color wights is unstoppable. The only salvation may be the brother whose freedom and life Gavin stole sixteen years ago.

What happened in The Blinding Knife?

  • Kip has been sent back to the Chromeria to become a Blackguard. Gavin (actually Dazen… this could get confusing) heads to Seer’s Island with Karris after saving some refugees from a sea demon.
  • Gavin plans to speak to a powerful woman who can can the future. He wants to build a home for refugees on the island. This woman, aka The Third Eye, knows that Gavin is actually Dazen and that he has already lost the blue.
  • She is able to give Dazen some advice and he uses it to kill the blue bane.
  • Rela Gavin is trying to escape prison, btw.
  • Kip goes through Blackguard training in the Chromeria. He meets a colour blind slave called Teia. The other students don’t like Kip because he seems to have had special treatment.
  • Ironfist announces that, due to the war going terribly, the top fourteen students will graduate rather than seven. They need more people in the army, clearly.
  • Andross Guile takes an interest in Kip, since Kip is his grandson.
  • Dazen and Karris return to the Chromeria. Dazen meets with the Spectrum, and they rename Seer’s Island as New Tyrea. Danavis becomes satrap of this new territory.
  • Andross Guile hires men to ambush and beat up Karris. Andross wants Dazen to marry the green but the green is way too young for him so Dazen refuses.
  • Kip meets Janus Borig, an artist who creates new Nine Kings cards. Kip has been playing the game with his grandfather and wants to win.
  • Janus tells Kip that she’s in danger, and shortrly after she becomes wounded by assassins and her house is burnt down.
  • Kip grabs a new deck of cards. He kills the assassins and gives their shimmercloaks to Ironfist and Dazen.
  • Liv swears fealty to the Colour Prince. He sends his army towards Ru.
  • Real Gavin escapes the green prison and gets stuck in yellow. The Prism shows up to chat to him and then shoots him. Charming.
  • Kip ranks fourteenth in the test. He is a full spectrum polychrome.
  • Dazen takes Kip and heads towards Ru with a bunch of Blackguards. They manage to sink a pirate ship.
  • Karris and Dazen get married. Karris knows it’s Dazen btw.
  • A green bane is trying to birth a new god. The team heads over to kill them. Ironfist leads the assault. The green bane emerges from the sea. Dazen realises he has lost the ability to draft green.
  • Live throws a beam of light to the spire, and awakens the green god, Atirat.
  • Ironfist and his team blow up the spire. Kip stabs Atirat and kills it. Although this seems victorious, they lose Ru to the Colour Prince.

  • A pirate ship picks up Dazen and Kip from the sea. They meet Captain Gunner, who keeps Dazen and the gun-sword made from the Blinding Knife, and then he throws Kip back overboard.
